The flight and arrival at the campus

I left for Ankara on Saturday around 7.40, which was kinda a nightmare since I had to get up at 3 o'clock.

In the plane I was seated next to Visar who - how we eventually found out - is also an Erasmus student at Bilkent University and even also member of the Socialdemocratic Party.

The trip to the Campus was an adventure, since almost nobody speaks English here.
So the first thing I had to face here is that your English is always only as good as the English knowledge of the person you talk to.
Sign language works out really well though, so I might be a Charade champion when coming back to Germany in January;)

Nachdem ich Samstag um 3 Uhr aufgestanden bin, bin ich mit meinen Eltern nach Frankfurt gefahren, wo mein Flieger Richtung Ankara gegen 7.40 Uhr losgeflogen ist.

Im Flugzeug hab ich Visar getroffen, der nicht nur zusammen mit mir hier an der Bilkent University studiert, sondern auch noch SPD-Mitglied ist;)

Die wenigsten Leute hier sprechen Englisch, weshalb man sich fast ausschliesslich mit Zeichensprache verstaendigen muss. Aber da ich einen Tuerkischkurs belege, sollte das bald zu einem kleineren Problem werden.

The other Erasmus students

Saturday I hung out with Visar and we went to Real to buy all the necessary basics. Since we both got up that early, we went to our dorms quite early.

Before going to bed, I wanted to make my WiFi work, but I had some issues with my own (!) modem. So I went downstairs to the lobby to have some WiFi, where I met some Dutch guys (Inez and Mels).

It turned out that we had to go to the International Office to fill out our Residence Permit forms and then we ended up in one of the 20 restaurants.

In the first few days I kinda ended up in the Dutch bubble, so I actually started to learn some Dutch, which is not that unneccessary when hanging out with a lot of Dutch people all the time.

Nachdem ich Samstag fast die ganze Zeit mit Visar unterwegs war und wir bei Real alle noetigen Sachen gekauft hatten, sind wir schon recht frueh ins Wohnheim, um schlafen zu gehen.

Ich wollte dann mein Internetmodem installieren, hatte jedoch ein paar Probleme, weshalb ich das WLAN in der Lobby nutzen wollte. Dort kam dann einer der Studenten, die fuer die Erasmus-Leute zustaendig sind und ist mit 2 Hollaendern und mir zusammen zum International Office, damit wir alle Unterlagen fuer die Wohnerlaubnis unterschreiben konnten.

Die letzten Tage bin ich vorwiegend mit Hollaendern unterwegs, weswegen ich jetzt zusaetzlich noch angefangen habe, Hollaendisch zu lernen.

The Campus

Bilkent University is a private university and the campus is just enormous, that is why I will actually do a particular post just about the campus.

Die Bilkent University ist eine private Universitaet und zudem einer der besten in der Tuerkei. Deshalb ist der Campus so riesig, dass ich nochmal einen extra Eintrag darueber verfassen werde.

I am sorry for the bad photos, but I didn't carry my camera around and so they are just taken with my iPhone. So next time there will be better photos!

(I am on the run the whole day and use WiFi on my phone just before I go to sleep, so don't be angry, that I am not answering your WhatsApp and FB messages. )
